Drip Drop

07/10/2015

It has been rainy rainy on the ranch. Which means you can't fight thistles. You can't drive the tractor in too many places. And you get slugs. SLUGS! Big slugs with antlers. No, not little snail horns. These are shell-less beasts with antlers that will eat a row of baby lettuce in a night. And what are the options to fight a slugs in an organic garden? You sprinkle salt on them or you pick them off. One by one. Plant by Plant. Row by row.  So drip drop, kurplunk kurplop. Here we go a slug hunting.

Spur

This is Spur. Some chickens earn names, others never stand out and just stay as one of the flock. So Spur is Spur because she has grown an enormous spur off her left foot.  Maybe this gives her the extra confidence to peck around where few other chickens will go. She often joins us in the deck for lunch.  I sneak her bits of salad or grilled cheese or taco. I snapped a photo of her today. She also follows me into our workroom where the human treats are stashed and for her boldness she often gets a potato chip.
Towards the end of lunch today I looked over at her and she was falling asleep. Maybe, for a change, I'll follow her and take a little nap myself.

After 11 months and two weeks we finally have a colt running about on the ranch. Corduroy came onto the scene at 1:30am Friday night.  And a dark night it was. The next few hours were spent playing goalie as Corduroy stumble around the ranch in the dark running into this and stumbling into that. Suede, momma, appreciated the help I think. By morning we were all tired.  Corduroy figured out how to lay down but couldn't quite get his head comfortable so I wandered over and offered my lap. He thought that was a good idea. I fell asleep too and woke-up to find Suede watching over us both.

Four new baby highlanders have joined the act at Copper Bar Ranch over the past month. And we are running a pretty symmetric calving season so far- a red bull, a white bull, a red heifer, and a white heifer.  The last one born was a bit unexpected but here it was, a little white fur ball sitting in the field where there hadn't been anything before.
Besides white fur balls, there is also still a far amount of white snow sitting around too. No complaints from this rancher. I'll take moisture in any form I can get it.

We have three baby cows on the ground. Chicago, a white heifer. Sandy, a red heifer. Stan, a white bull.  If you read enough of these posts, you'll start to see that more than a few animals have the name Stan. Stan is what we call any male that is most likely going to become steaks one day, and not a bull. So what do we call bulls? They are all named Sam.  Every single bull we have ever had has been named Sam. My Dad brought this naming tradition from his grandparents' farm in Southern Indiana.  So no matter if you are a Holstein, a Saler, or a Highland, if you are a bull, then you are Sam!

Spring Push

May 07, 2012

Little Chicago, our calf born last week, is doing wonderfully well.  She decided to pick a fight with a dandelion yesterday and was head butting the ground and stomping around on the little yellow flower. There wasn't much of it left when she completed her blitzkrieg.  And to think back to last week as I was bottle feeding her in my living room - what a change.

The first of our spinach is making an appearance along with a few bold spears of asparagus.  While the spinach can handle the freezes we are still having, the asparagus has no chance against even the slightest nip and morning brings with it limp, dead asparagus.  A few hardy herbs are pushing their way through the dirt - green can be seen!

Sprung!

May 01, 2012

We are well ahead this year with asparagus and spinach already peaking through the ground. And, we have our first calf on the ground so it must be spring.
Our newest calf, a fuzzy white girl out of one of our older momma cows, is doing well even though she got off to rough start.  Looks like she will be a bottle baby which is lovely when they are 40 lbs but not so cute when they gain a few hundred pounds! No one wants a 800 lbs lap-cow.

Tickets on sale Tomorrow

Less than two weeks until Outstanding in the Field arrives. Perhaps the bus will make it this year but 8000 feet is as hard on a bus as it is on plants. There are still tickets available if anyone is hungry.

Newest Addition

June 27, 2011

This is our newest addition to Copper Bar Ranch - a little heifer about 8 hours old in this photo.

Summer is here.

June 21, 2011

Although it snowed yesterday, we are saying that summer is here. The gardens are all pushing up through the moist, dark dirt and the first rhubarb torte is out of the oven and into our stomachs.  Now, we just need the warm days to keep the lettuce growing.

Wedding?

June 11, 2011

Had a bunch of folks out yesterday, with Resturaunt Avondale, to check-out the ranch as an event and wedding venue. Mother Nature played along with a gorgeous blue sky for the tour!

Winter Keeping Its Grasp

May 13, 2011

The middle of May approaches but Old Man Winter still has a tight grip on Copper Bar Ranch.  Many of our Mamma Cows are looking round and ready to pop so hopefully warm days are ahead to welcome the little calves.
Even with the snow and freezing temperatures, the tenacious Chives and Egyptian Onions are up- we just love the spots of green!

Here's an article that talks about one of our favorite partnerships - Avondale Resturaunt

Deliveries

July 18, 2010

Middle of July and we are finally in full swing - delivering to a handful of restaurants who turn our produce into beautiful dishes.  Our garden is all over the valley!

Dog days of summer...

July 14, 2010

It is about as hot as it gets on the ranch - peaking at about 80.  The elk are swiming the ponds to cool down, the dogs refuse to move from underneath the tractor even when you start the engine, and working in jeans could be a new form of torture.  The good news is the pants are starting to catch-up from the strange spring weather.

Two Weeks!!

July 12, 2010

Just two weeks from today OUTSTANDING IN THE FIELD comes to the ranch. We are so excited!
See you there....

July is here!

Jul 01, 2010

July is here and with it warm days and afternoon storms.  Great for the garden.  Outstanding in the Field is just a handful of days away and we are excited!
The new chickens are starting to lay too.
All-in-all, life is good at Copper Bar Ranch.

One Month...

June 27, 2010

30 days and counting! Outstanding in the Field at Copper Bar Ranch is 30 days away... woohoo.
The lettuce is growing...the roses are blooming...the Johnny Jump-ups are jumping. Otherwise said, the ranch is excited for the party.

Coming soon to a ranch near you....

June 23, 2010

In a couple weeks we will start selling our beautiful lettuce - a salad in a basket. Stay tuned!

Warm Days...

June 21, 2010

Warm days are here and the lettuce is growing like a weed - Arugula, Salad Bowl, Freckles, Oak Leaf, Red Romaine - and the list goes on. Not to mention the beets are up, the radishes are pushing through, the spinach is taller each day, and the Rhubarb! oh the Rhubarb!  Summer is glowing and growing at Copper Bar Ranch.

Frost Free?

June 15, 2010

Put 'em out - your plants that is.

June 15/Father's Day/June' s Full Moon marks the beginning of our frost-free season. Of course, we have had snow on the 4th of July.  And at higher altitudes around the valley you should have your garden completely planted.
Email with questions... we are happy to help.

Daffodils Blooming

May 14, 2010

The daffodils are blooming so wives tales tell us that means we can start planting spinach, chard, and some other hardy greens.

Don't rush the other stuff - we still have a way to go before the ground gets warm enough to sprout seeds before they rot.

Spring Storm

May 12, 2010

It seems the theme of this spring is warm days followed by wintery nights.  The sporatic snow is good for the ground and we will gladly take any moisture to restock the soils.
This is also a good reminder why we are labeled as a Zone 4 garden community - don't push your luck with early planting.

Manure for Sale

Apr 30, 2010

Getting ready to plant your garden?  We have well rotted manure for sale and will deliver in the Vail Valley.  Contact us and we can customize a blend for your needs.

We are also happy to help with any gardening issues.  High altitude gardening can be a tricky game to play - let us help you play the game.

For example, do not be fooled by warm days.  It is critical that the ground is warm before you plant seeds.  Otherwise, the seeds will rot in the moist spring soil before they germinate.

First Spring Calf

April 20, 2010

This is our newest addition.  In this photo he is hours old and, as you can tell, still wet.

Spring?

March 29, 2010

This past weekend sure felt like spring at Copper Bar Ranch - chickens stretched out in the sun, chives and red mustard pushing their green heads out of the dirt, and soon-to-be cow moms waddling around the pasture. But, as we all know, March and April are still winter around here so while we tentative start to think about mud season chores, we still know there can be more snow to shovel.

Don't forget, Outstanding in the Field tickets are on sale now.  Many of the events have already sold out.
